TREATMENT VERSUS INCARCERATION

October 20, 2008

Narconon of Georgia was founded as an alternative to incarceration in 2001 with its first 20 persons coming directly from jail.

I worked with a community court Judge in a pilot to determine the effectiveness of rehab versus incarceration for those offenders who were addicts and had the opportunity to go directly into holding cells and even into a jail pod to interview qualified candidates for the pilot.

It was through this experience that I was thrust from the ranks of oblivious citizen to one in the know concerning the un-therapeutic and hostile milieu of jail. I saw young people locked up like animals. Whatever mistake they made with drugs seemed irreparable, now that they were caught up in the system. They had a record that would follow them with a loss of self respect that could ruin them for life. There was a TV perched in the furthest corner and difficult to see and a guard who would yell whenever someone laughed too loudly. How this set up was of any benefit to anyone inside jail or in society I will never know.

I really wished that I could take them all with me, but I could only take 20. I picked 20 guys, got them out of jail and took them to Narconon with me. They all completed the program. The pilot was successful and proved that treatment is a viable alternative to incarceration. Not only is it more effective and cheaper, it is more humane and leaves a person with dignity.

Society is better off.

Drug treatment works whether one is an offender of not.

Narconon is a viable solution. We have a 76% success rate. 877-413-3073

I Found Something Precious

NARCONON OBJECTIVES COURSE

This is a success from a Narconon drug treatment student, currently enrolled in the program.

This course has shown me that I am a part of the overall environment and I have value. As I have been moving through this course I have become more aware of myself. I see my environment in a way I never have before and I am more aware of myself and others.

I know that the value that I place on myself has increased. How I treat others reflects how I treat myself. How I treat my environment reflects how I treat myself. It seems that when I orient myself correctly in my environment, when I am aware of others in my environment and when I realize I am more than just another object, I begin to assign better values to myself and those around me.

What once seemed very important now seems less important.

Where I took myself for granted or abused myself I now find something precious.”
